As passengers approach their liftoff site, they are dwarfed by the 10-storey silhouette of a hot air balloon. Beneath the vessel’s colourful curvature, a licensed pilot gestures for them to clamber into the basket. Armed with knowledge gleaned from a quick pre-flight briefing, passengers settle into their woven carriage. Above them, propane burners—which are 1000 times stronger than a home barbecue yet refuse to flash-grill hot dogs—inflate the balloon’s 250,000 cubic-foot interior. The ascent begins, and on the way up the basket brushes past cornstalks and treetops as it climbs up to 2,500 feet in the air.

These flights, which run from May–October, take off from a predetermined location and can launch either a half-hour before sunrise or 2.5 hours before sunset. Because balloons drift with prevailing winds, there is no wind chill and travellers feel only a slight sensation of movement. As is tradition for ballooning, of-age explorers end their flight with a champagne toast to tranquility, beauty, and neighbourhoods that appear as giant smiley faces from the air. Though the flight lasts approximately one hour, passengers should allot four total hours for check-in, travel to launch location, safety briefing, setup and packing, and return to meeting location.
