The Rose & Crown Pub is an English-style pub in its most timeless, traditional sense. But when it was founded in 1978, it was a trailblazer: the first pub to open after the end of local liquor laws requiring that restaurants serve alcohol only with a meal or in tiny teacups. Today, guests flock to the bar for full, 20-ounce pints of local and European beers, ranging from Boss Hog oatmeal IPA to cask-conditioned ales from Scotland’s Innis & Gunn.
The menu, too, sprinkles North American influences into a wide selection of hearty British favorites. Poutine can be loaded with spicy beef or Cajun-style chicken; there’s a BLT with maple-smoked bacon, a bison burger, and a pulled-pork sandwich. From across the pond come beer-battered fish and chips alongside bangers and mash and, typical of a modern English pub, even a couple of Indian dishes.
