When the Scottish rock group Big Country released their watershed debut album The Crossing in 1983, it served as a bold statement. Their unique sound—centered on traditional folk instruments, choruses born for chanting, and electric guitars engineered to evoke trilling bagpipes—was unlike anything else playing on the radio. The band packed up their e-bows and parlayed their UK success across the shores with their breakout hit and early MTV staple, “In a Big Country.”
Decades later, Big Country’s sound continues to evoke the amp-ridden atmosphere of the highlands with the talents of original members and new lead singer Mike Peters, former frontman of fellow UK hitmakers The Alarm. Touting The Journey, their first album in 14 years, Big Country inspires euphoric bellowing and enthusiastic fist-pumping in an energized set mixing new anthems and fan favorites.
