Only four ingredients comprise the preservative-free, naturally carbonated German-style lager at Yellowhead Brewery: barley, hops, yeast, and water. The premium lager, named in honour of Edmonton’s first beer brewed commercially in 1894, enchants tongues with a malty sweetness, hints of hops, and a smooth finish. It fills the taps at the brewery’s tasting room, where diners can pair pours with bites from a menu of pub food that changes daily but has included burgers crowned with housemade relish and chorizo-topped pizza made with naan.
More lager flows in Yellowhead’s private room, which envelopes guests in rustic comfort characterized by a rough wood-panelled ceiling, wooden furniture, and exposed brick walls speckled with abstract art. To further acquaint guests with the prized libation, tour guides lead them in an exploration of the brewery. They highlight the heritage of the historical Shaw building—built in 1913—and explain the beer-making process, dispelling the myth that beer is just liquid nectar sent down by the gods.
